Healing a broken Heart

Have you ever been hurt so bad that the pain continues for days on end? And every time someone touches that specific area it reminds you of how you got that wound or bruise, almost as if you re-live that moment. It seems almost as if the pain will never go away or that we will never be healed, but in time we do. And the awesome thing is that we never have to face that healing process alone.

“The Lord is close to all whose hearts are crushed by pain, and He is always ready to restore the repentant one.” – Psalm 34:18 TPT

When our heart gets hurt, the pain seems to last for days, weeks, months and sometimes years. The same way a wound gets infected if untreated, our hearts can get affected by pain and the result can be bitterness, fear or even depression. You need ointment and surgical alcohol to clean the wound and you have to keep the wound clean for it to get healed. And most importantly “not pick at it” (Immediately got a flashback of my mom saying to leave my scabs).

The only way to clean and treat a sore heart is with love, and not just any love, but the love of God for you. It is the best ointment for your heart. And it also helps not picking at the wound. For example, we tend to replay the events that caused us pain and we wish we could redo these events, we even condemn ourselves for letting it happen. Don’t do that, that will cause the wound to take longer to heal, but when you think about it, take it to God and say:” Jesus, I give this pain to you, I trust you to heal my heart.”

“Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding, but in all your ways acknowledge Him.” – Proverbs 3:5

We tend to think that we have to face this pain alone, or bury it under the dirt and not deal with it. That is like leaving an open wound untreated. It starts to get infected with bitterness and long-term fear starts to form on the wound and the infections stop you from functioning properly in the future. You end up not forgiving people when they hurt you. You end up being bitter towards people when they do one little thing that reminds you of those infected wounds. You end up not acting like yourself, you act out of pain almost like the pain defines you. Don’t let pain change and alter you into someone who you are not…

But how do I deal with it, Annie?

What do you do when you have a wound you cannot treat? You go to a doctor or nurse that knows how to disinfect it. God created you and He knows how your heart works; He knows what will heal your heart. This verse says, “trust the Lord with all your heart”. We can trust God to take care and heal our hearts because He loves us and cares for us. He wants you to come to Him so that He can help you. And I’m not saying the wound will heal immediately but I’m saying the wound will heal completely.

The last part of the verse says, “in all your ways acknowledge Him”, when you’re in pain or in a situation, don’t think you need to face it alone, ask God to help you. You don’t need to beg or pray for 10 hours, with God there are no conditions. He will be there when you ask Him to help you. And the more you acknowledge Him and speak to Him, the more joy you will find in knowing His love for you.

Take-Away: When you face trials or things that cause you pain say “Jesus I trust you and I give it to you.”
